Girl, Let's Talk About Your Hair
I met Ma-musu when she got in touch with me after buying some products from the Organic SUKU Certified Organic Collection. She asked me to be a panelist on an exciting event she’s running in Adelaide on Sunday 21 October. She termed it ‘Girl Let’s Talk About Your Hair’ … I was intrigued.
Fast forward to October 2018 and we’re just a few days away from this ground breaking hair event created for the African-Australian community in Adelaide.
I asked Ma-musu to give us more insight on the event and what to expect. Here’s what she had to say.
HOW DID THE CONCEPT OF YOUR EVENT, ‘GIRL LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR HAIR’ COME TO LIFE?
Early this year, I posted on my Instagram stories asking my followers to recommend African Australian Businesses that cater to kinky curly hair. Thats where I came cross Organic SUKU and other businesses. Through that post I realised that many women had the same struggle as me when it came to our hair, we were spending a lot of money on purchasing products internationally because all the products we were exposed to were not catered to us or our hair.
It was from that instagram post that ‘Girl, Lets Talk About Your Hair’ was born. With all the feedback I had received, I realised how vital an event like this was within our community spaces. My hope for this event is to educate and celebrate people of colour. To create a space were we are able to talk openly and freely.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO EXPERIENCE AT YOUR EVENT?
I am hoping to create an instagramable experience. I want my attendees to feel at ease and go with the flow. I’ve brought together a collection of some of my favourite hair care products and will be connecting people with businesses and brands that cater to their hair needs. We will have a few live demonstrations by some of the businesses and brands showcasing how they use their products plus some giveaways. The event will educate and celebrate everything about healthy, kinky, curly and protective hair. I aim to showcase positivity in everything that I do and creating a space that empowers everyone on the day.
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO HOST A HAIR EVENT IN ADELAIDE?
I created this hair event because I saw that it was necessary. Events like these are always happening elsewhere and rarely in Australia, especially in Adelaide. Events like these are really important, because being a minority here in Australia, there are rarely any events that cater to us on a personal level, so these sort of events celebrate and showcase our talents and will surely inspire a younger generation.
AS HOST OF YOUR VERY OWN HAIR EVENT, WE’RE CURIOUS, WHAT HAIR PRODUCTS ARE IN YOUR BATHROOM CABINET?
I’ve been using Afroshe’s products to wash my hair and Organic SUKU’s Organic Scalp Care Duo for moisture. My go to Organic SUKU product is the Castor Oil, I absolutely love the progress my hair line has made since I started using it. Plus the Shea Butter is amazing for my hair but also my skin. It multi purpose.
